On-Boarding Large Enterprise Customers onto the Cloud

Introduction

Customer A, one of the largest banks in the mid-western region of the United States, acquired Customer B, a large transportation finance business that used our product and had an on-premise setup successfully running for many years.

Customer A, being a financial services firm, was faced with the question of hosting the products on-premise or having us host the solution.

Challenge

Banking and Financial institutions are known for their risk-averse attitude. Data Sensitivity and Data Security were primary concerns voiced by Customer A while considering the options of moving to a hosted cloud solution as opposed to migrating Customer B’s data to an on-premise setup.

Approach:

With a view of security concerns that Customer A put forth, the approach recommended was that the legacy data from the on-premise setup be transferred over a secure file transfer protocol using encryption. This ensured that protocols for security and reliability are met and maintained.
Key requirements of Customer A were reviewed in terms of:
Core Business Decision:
Business decisions post the acquisition were discussed to understand how the data from Customer B was to be integrated or maintained separately. Based on this, it was decided to migrate Customer B’s data onto an independent hosted environment and also standup a new hosted environment on the cloud for Customer A.. The above decision also factored in suitability to meet future business needs, capability to safely secure data and integration with existing applications.
Time to Market:
The environments had to be turned around very quickly and migrated over considering Customer B’s existing client base was to be unaffected through the time the acquisition was complete.

Benefits:

• Customer A did not have to deal with the procuring and setting up of physical/virtualized infrastructure. Being a customer from the financial domain, although they did have their IT infrastructure in place, this isn’t their primary area of expertise so they would have had to allocate resources to manage and maintain the systems – in terms of performance and productivity. The operating expense and capital expenses could be diverted elsewhere when the migration was done. License costs for the software stack would have been expensive and a hosted solution worked in their favour.
• Customer A is assured of a highly reliable, secure environment that is scalable over time.
• Concerns on third party handling confidential data were mitigated by migrating the secure financial domain customer onto certified secure environment.
• Integration with existing systems – ADFS was done which ensured a quick time to market.
